This weekend, she hosted the 1st Southern Cannabis Reform Conference in Atlanta in an events center near the campus of Georgia Tech. The Thursday before, she organized a press conference at the State Capitol that put the issue of marijuana legalization on the local CBS, ABC, and FOX evening news.

Speaking on behalf of Project SAM, or Smart Approaches to Marijuana, Dr. Kevin Sabet explained that advocates for medical marijuana legalization are “putting on white coats and pretending to have compassion for the sick and dying.”
What is the incentive for this push for treatment centers for marijuana use when Mr. Kennedy knows from available evidence and personal experience that alcohol and pharmaceutical drugs are far more harmful? Based on my own personal experience, I think I have at least part of the answer.
Although most Americans don’t use cannabis, we all have good reason to support sound cannabis regulation and to be highly critical of SAM. But the real threat to our safety is neither cannabis, nor SAM, it is our willingness to give up our own civil liberties and our apathy once we lose them.
This morning at 6am I launched SmartApproaches.com. It is a page-for-page satire of the website LearnAboutSAM.com, which was recently mentioned in various news media as the front page for Project SAM. It uses actual policy positions and rhetorical claims from Project SAM and peppers them with copious amounts of snark, studies, sarcasm, and science. And fake evil-Spock goatees.
Steven E. Elliott, marijuana activist and blogger at the popular site Toke of the Town, has been charged with Assault in the 4th Degree, according to records from the Kitsap County Jail. Mr. Elliott is being held on a $5,000 cash bond and as of press time, jail records indicate he is still incarcerated. According to police records, Mr. Elliott was booked on Monday, January 14, at 8pm.

Basically, this is Kevin Sabet’s game plan writ large. Sabet wants to paint the “War on Drugs” on one side and the “Legalizers” on the other side and proclaim them both to be irrational extremes, and only SAM I Am will have the rational, middle ground approach.

Per se DUID is not going away and it will eventually pass. Give them something we like now or wait til the first big freeway wreck that can be tied to someone’s newly-legal recreational use and watch a standard we really hate get rammed through the legislature.
