The Russ Belville Show

This woman cannot tell you whether marijuana is more harmful to self and society than meth, heroin, and cocaine. She’s in charge of drug enforcement.

US Rep. Jared Polis from Colorado has spoken at NORML Conference and been very supportive of the medical marijuana community.  Recently, DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart was testifying before a House committee when Rep. Polis tried to just get her to answer some simple questions about the harms of marijuana relative to other illegal drugs.  Administrator Leonhart dodges his questions eleven times in the course of the testimony.

Remember that Leonhart was the Acting DEA Administrator under George W. Bush.  She infamously declared the slaughter of tens of thousands of Mexicans in our Prohibition War a “signpost of success” in our fight against ruthless drug traffickers, who were acting like “caged animals”.  Statements like this got her permanently appointed to the DEA Administrator position by President Obama.

So long as our federal drug policy is written by people like Gil Kerlikowske, who figures that we can’t control legal Oxycontin, so we shouldn’t legalize marijuana, and enforced by Michele Leonhart, who can’t even admit that marijuana is less harmful than methamphetamine, we can’t expect any rational discourse at the federal level.

Every person in power, whose paycheck comes from the taxpayers coffers, should be scrutinised in this way. It is disgraceful that she can sit there and attempt to deny the evidence. She knows all too well that cannabis isn’t harmful, but the DEA get $2.02 BILLION a year to enforce these ridiculous laws. The DEA could stand to lose a significant amount of that cash if cannabis were legalised, so it’s no wonder she was struggling to know what to say.

Her response is testament to exactly why the law is wrong and we need to begin to repeal prohibition of ALL drugs so that they can be controlled in a an effective manner. The world would be a FAR safer place under a legalised, controlled framework with regard to currently illegal drugs….. but there are too many people in power who’d lose out!!

(BTW – I’m in the UK, but a change in US law would undoubtedly have a positive effect over here too…. our PM David Cameron will do anything to please Uncle Barry!)

Was it just me or did she have a scared almost terrified look on her face when he started comparing drugs? Its almost the same look I had when the police knocked on my door. Now come on she knows the truth you could tell she was running from Mr. Polis and she is the administrator for the big bad dea?

    Brilliant!

To reform a powerful, entrenched agency like the DEA, appoint a poor performing holdover from the previous administration.

Think of how screwed we would all be if the DEA put someone good up to speak for them.  No wonder Franken and the rest tossed softballs during her confirmation.

Rep. Steve Cohen rips into her pretty good too.

Yes she looked dumb but it was a waste of time asking her those questions because by her admitting marijuana is safer would contradict how the drugs are scheduled by her employer.
