With a stroke of the (Republican) governor’s pen, Vermont this morning became the ninth state to legalize marijuana possession (one ounce) for adults. It becomes the the eighth state to legalize cannabis cultivation for adults (two mature plants, four immature plants). But most importantly, it becomes the first state to legalize marijuana through an act of the legislature rather than citizen initiative petitions!
So, Democrats, with a Republican governor signing legalization, you’re risking getting scooped on the next big electoral wave. Good gravy, we got medical marijuana in West Virginia, Arkansas, and North Dakota last election, and we’re going to get Oklahoma, Utah, and Missouri in the next election.
I think y’all can move past “it needs a bit more study” and “I’d like to wait and see what happens with Colorado” at this point. Step up now and be the party that boldly and proudly calls for marijuana legalization before the Republicans see the dollar signs piling up from legalized marijuana and take those donors and voters that have been yours for the taking for too long now.
