Box Canyon III: Trends in Medical Marijuana Legislation

The Box Canyon isn’t just that medical marijuana gets stricter and that we’re driving our issue into the hands of Big Pharma. It’s also that we’ve intentionally divided our political base and created an interest group vested in keeping us in the medical marijuana canyon.

NY Gov. Cuomo Urges Change in Marijuana “Stop-and-Frisk” Arrests

Sadly, the first major American city to decriminalize marijuana back in the 70’s is also the marijuana arrest capital of the world today. New York City has an ugly history of arresting people for small amounts of marijuana in the decriminalized city by stopping them and asking them to empty their pockets. The practice has become known as the “stop and frisk” and it’s practice has lead to overwhelmingly racist crime statistics in the Big Apple.

Prohibiting things to adults is what we do to deal with adult behavior we don’t like. It’s a simple, politically-expedient, feel-good way of pretending to address a problem. Some people who do drugs get out of control? Ban drugs! Some people who are armed kill others? Ban guns! Whatever it is, abortion, fur, a movie, a song, leaf blowers, Wal-Mart, or medical marijuana dispensaries, somebody in America has a non-profit and a Facebook page dedicated to banning it. Except maybe the “Ban Facebook” people.
