Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to curb obesity by restricting soft drink sizes has gone into effect today. The Board of Health voted 6-to-1 to enact the ban, which limits the size of sugary soda drinks to 16 ounces at the city’s restaurants and concession stands.

Prohibiting things to adults is what we do to deal with adult behavior we don’t like. It’s a simple, politically-expedient, feel-good way of pretending to address a problem. Some people who do drugs get out of control? Ban drugs! Some people who are armed kill others? Ban guns! Whatever it is, abortion, fur, a movie, a song, leaf blowers, Wal-Mart, or medical marijuana dispensaries, somebody in America has a non-profit and a Facebook page dedicated to banning it. Except maybe the “Ban Facebook” people.
