Absolutely brilliant! This writer suggests that we defuse the Right’s use of Cultural Wedge Issues on the national electorate by aggressively standing up for States Rights. Let’s acknowledge that we are Blue and Red and we’ll never think alike, so let us govern ourselves that way on all but national issues. After all, the right for states to govern themselves according to their local culture was so important the Founders wrote it into the 10th Amendment.
Let the Red states have nondenominational school prayer, 10 Commandments in the court houses, no gay marriage or civil unions, creationism in their textbooks, and so on. This takes the issues off the national table so we can beat the hell out of the Righties with substantive policy issues. Also, as their better educated and gay citizens flee those states and their kids grow up with worse educations, the resulting brain drain will force them to evolve in order to compete economically.
