Next Tuesday is the Democratic primary election in Kansas, and three gubernatorial candidates are showing increasing levels of support for marijuana law reform. State Senator Laura Kelly supports medical marijuana. [KELLY CLIP: “I would want it regulated and controlled in a way that ensured that it was used for the proper things.”] Former Ag Secretary Josh Svaty supports both medical marijuana and decriminalization. [SVATY CLIP: “We are spending state taxpayer dollars locking largely non-violent offenders up in our prisons.”] Former Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer goes furthest of the three with his support of medical marijuana and adult legalization. [BREWER CLIP: “You just treat it the exact same way that we would treat alcohol or cigarettes. Too much of anything is not going to be healthy for you.”] Kelly, Svaty, and Brewer are also facing Arden Andersen and teenager Jack Bergeson in the primary. At past debates, both Andersen and Bergeson have said they support the legalization of medical marijuana.
