Marijuana is increasingly becoming a hot-button issue in gubernatorial races across the country. In South Carolina, three Democrats seeking the office vacated by now-UN Ambassador Nikki Haley were asked about their support for medical marijuana. State Rep. James Smith, Jr., supports it, explaining how veterans could benefit. Marguerite Willis also supports regulated medical marijuana. Phil Noble offered his support for easing penalties on minor marijuana offenses. The primary vote is June 12. Among the Republicans, incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster is opposed. [MCMASTER CLIP: “It’s a bad idea to legalize marijuana. It would hurt the people, particularly the young people.”] But two other Republicans, former Lt. Gov. Yancey McGill and current Lt. Gov. Kevin Bryant, both support medical marijuana legalization.
