(MM) The Democratic Party of New York is officially on board with legalizing marijuana. A resolution adopted by delegates at the party’s convention on Wednesday spells out that legalization “is an important social justice issue.” But New York State Democratic delegates overwhelmingly voted for incumbent Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo over his progressive rival, Cynthia Nixon, to represent the party in the governor’s race. Nixon has strongly advocated for marijuana legalization as a social justice issue. [NIXON CLIP: “I believe it is time for New York to follow the lead of eight other states and DC and legalize recreational marijuana.”] Cuomo has moved slowly toward accepting legalization’s inevitability. [CUOMO CLIP: I have not supported legalizing marijuana. The situation is changing. I said, let’s do a study.”] Cuomo on Wednesday also enjoyed the endorsement of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
