Industrial hemp would finally be relegalized for cultivation in the United States under a bill overwhelmingly approved by the Senate. The wide-ranging agriculture and food policy legislation known as the Farm Bill, passed by a vote of 86 – 11 on Thursday, contains provisions to legalize the cultivation, processing and sale of industrial hemp. Yesterday in advance of the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell critiqued the economic impact of hemp prohibition on American farmers. [McCONNELL CLIP: “Since the 1970s, except in a few limited cases, American farmers have not been able to grow industrial hemp in their fields.”] McConnell was clear about bringing those hemp farm jobs back to his home state of Kentucky. [McCONNELL CLIP: “American consumers are buying hemp but thanks to heavy-handed regulation, the only option at scale is importing hemp from foreign producers. Enough is enough.”]
