The Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Jerome Adams, told the Washington Examiner that he is skeptical about the role of cannabis in reducing the opioid overdose crisis. [ADAMS CLIP: “We know that exposing the developing brain to marijuana can prime the brain to addiction and have potential negative consequences including promoting cancer.”] When asked about the numerous studies that show fewer adults with fully developed brains are dying from opioid overdoses where there is legal access to marijuana, Adams explained how cigarette smoking is bad for you. [ADAMS CLIP: “It would be incredibly disingenuous of me to say that you shouldn’t smoke a cigarette but it is fine to go out and smoke a joint.”] Adams concluded by warning about the potential unknown negative effects from marijuana use that could be of concern to someone addicted to am opioid that can kill them. [ADAMS CLIP: “I think it is important that we do look at the studies, but I also think it is important that we not jump on something that may have more potential consequences down the road.”]
