President Trump on Wednesday commuted the life sentence of Alice Johnson, a woman whose case was brought to his attention by fellow reality TV star Kim Kardashian. [KARDASHIAN CLIP: “I think that, you know, he really spent the time to listen to our case that we were making for Alice. He really understood…”] Johnson served more than 20 years in prison on eight charges arising from her involvement with a cocaine trafficking ring in Memphis. Her troubles began when she had lost her job at FedEx due to a gambling addiction, went through a divorce, and lost her youngest son in a motorcycle accident. In desperation, she began working for a cocaine ring by hooking up customers for the dealers. She never made the deals or handled the cocaine, she says. But when the ring was busted, ten of her co-defendants testified against her to get better plea deals for themselves. It was her first criminal offense and none of her charges involved any violence. She was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, ensuring her death behind bars had Kim Kardashian not convinced Donald Trump to set her free.
