Because the SEC is so awesome! Why? Because they play other schools in the SEC, which, of course, is awesome! That’s why we put an SEC team that didn’t even win its division in the playoffs over Ohio State, which won the B1G, because the B1G just isn’t as awesome as the SEC, because they don’t play against SEC schools.
Meanwhile, those awesome SEC schools (aside from the ones in the national playoff) went 2-5 in the bowls, including the Auburn team that was so awesome because it beat awesome #4 Alabama (by 2 scores) and awesome #3 Georgia (by 3 scores), but lost to an undefeated Group-5 UCF.
And B1G went 7-1 in bowl games.
I’m not saying Alabama isn’t a great team. They obviously are with that shellacking of Clemson. I’m saying their place in the college football national championship is illegitimate.
Plus, the chances of an Alabama going 1-loss is greatly aided by getting to play FCS Mercer or Georgia playing FCS Samford.
Meanwhile, Ohio State played no FCS schools, losing only to an awesome Oklahoma team and that big loss to unranked Iowa, which, apparently disqualifies you from the playoffs, even if you won your conference against the #6 team in the nation. Then you followed that up by beating the #8 team in a bowl, another conference winner.
Not only is Ohio State screwed after winning a conference championship, but so is Auburn by being forced to play a championship game against Georgia. Without that game, Auburn has beaten both Georgia and Alabama and is a 1-loss team. Though they also benefit from slaughters of Mercer, Georgia Southern, and Louisiana-Monroe.
If this is a national championship, every team in the nation ought to have a shot. Putting two teams from the same conference in the playoff is an insult and an abomination. Make it an 8-team playoff, where conference champs of the Power-5 get in plus 3 at-large berths, one guaranteed to the top Group 5 conference winner, and I’ll quit bitching.
