The Illinois House just voted 61-57 to pass the nation’s strictest medical marijuana bill, which would make Illinois the nineteenth state to legalize the use of limited amounts of marijuana under strict medical conditions.
Continuing to fight a medical-only fight for marijuana is only going to produce more restrictive, less effective medical marijuana laws. At every successive state, there will be some group of patients who will be left behind to secure marijuana rights for a dwindling group of the most severely ill and disabled.
The Box Canyon isn’t just that medical marijuana gets stricter and that we’re driving our issue into the hands of Big Pharma. It’s also that we’ve intentionally divided our political base and created an interest group vested in keeping us in the medical marijuana canyon.
