Oh, Randy, when will you ever learn that when it comes to marijuana, honesty may not be the best policy?
Randy Moss may regret he was ever frank while on camera.
The Oakland Raiders receiver is waiting to hear from the NFL if he’ll be placed in the league’s drug program, ESPN reported on Monday. Four years ago, Moss entered the program and was tested up to 10 times a month.
Last month, Moss told HBO Sports that he still smokes marijuana, albeit occasionally. After that interview, ESPN reported that Dr. Rick Spodafora, the NFL’s medical director, called Moss in for testing.
But Moss reportedly refused the test. Fox Sports reported that his attorney, David Cornwall, set up a meeting to lobby on Moss’ behalf that his interview did not constitute grounds to be tested.
Spodafora, who is independent of both the NFL and the National Football League Players’ Association, is still considering Moss’ argument. No timetable has yet been set for a decision. If Spodafora rules that Moss can be tested and the wideout still refuses, Moss could be suspended since suspensions could come from two missed drug tests — as Moss has already refused to participate in one.
See Randy Moss: Oakland Raider / Unrepentant Pothead for the story behind how he got in this trouble.
If only he would have stuck to the drugs the NFL has no problem with, like alcohol, tobacco, and any number of injectable pharmaceutical painkillers players are routinely given by the team’s trainers. You know, drugs that are actually harmful to your body. Or he could’ve done like Michael Irvin and gotten himself a room full of cocaine and hookers; at least the cocaine leaves your system in three days and makes it very easy to pass a drug test. (As far as I know, the NFL doesn’t test for hookers. Yet.)
But no, he had to smoke marijuana, which has eroded his skills so much that over his first seven seasons, his stats are on par with the greatest wide receiver ever, Jerry Rice.
You know there is a reason that multimillionaires who depend on their athletic prowess for their riches choose marijuana if they choose a recreational drug. Do you think they’d smoke pot if it would seriously affect their skills and their paychecks? There are ten up-and-coming young talents for every Randy Moss out there, and if pot made him lose a step, those rookies would be taking his job.
Athletes choose pot for the same reason everyone else does: it is safe and effective medicine.
