John at AMERICAblog has been covering the story of Microsoft abandoning their support of GLBT employees. It’s late and I’ll post more about it later, but this is the move that finally kills any support I have for Microsoft.
It’s difficult, considering my whole computer career to this point has depended on Microsoft products, and I’ve been quick to support them when my techy friends rag on security exploits, buggy code, and so on. But this is it. It’s one thing to have always been a bigoted company, but to have been a supporter of diversity, a winner of awards for diversity, and then betray those ideals when the political winds shift and one American Taliban mullah threatens a boycott, well, it’s just sad.
Anyway, I’ve now switched to FireFox and I recommend you do the same. And this will probably kickstart my longtime desire to break into Linux. I abandoned FrontPage a long time ago. (But nothing will probably ever pry Excel off my hard drive.) Be aware there may be some changes to the web site as I adjust my style sheets, graphics, and links to reflect my newfound anti-Redmond attitude.
