Don’t worry, I haven’t fallen off the blogosphere. I’m currently fighting with Comcast. We upgraded our free basic analog cable to digital cable, and along with that, we got the high-speed internet. Pretty cool, that 4Mbps speed! Too bad I can’t use it right now.
Problem is, when I called in the order, I gave the incorrect address to our apartment. We had been living in 11834, but we now live in 11830. For some reason, I told them the old number.
That was fine, though. TV came in and I set up the internet today. All good. I was downloading and reading and just getting ready to blog. But then I thought, hmm, I oughta call in and get my address changed to the correct number.
Big mistake.
I called in and had them change the account to 11830. No problems. TV was fine, internet was fine. But after about an hour, I suddenly lost internet connectivity. I called the tech support and after some troubleshooting (which is tough for me, because I do it for a living, but I have to be patient while the phone goon tries to explain what the Start -> Run command is) he decides that my modem needed to be reset.
OK, I unplug, I wait, I reboot, I turn back on. Still no internet. I call tech support again and tell them the story, but this time I add the whole “wrong address” portion.
Oh, no, that’s the whole problem. My 11834 address was associated with acct# whocares and the new 11830 address is associated with acct# dontgiveashit. So I have to re-run the setup program and put in the dontgiveashit number.
Alright, I do that. Still no internet. I call back for the third time. Now the problem is that yes, my 11830 address is good, and yes, my dontgiveashit account number is correct, but now my RadicalRuss username is still linked to the old whocares account number.
Fine. Move RadicalRuss over to dontgiveashit. Ah, therein lies the rub. Tech support geek #3 can’t do that, he has to escalate it to a higher level, and that may take anywhere between 24-72 hours. One to three figgin’ days to make RadicalRuss agree with dontgiveashit. Seems to me that would be a simple little matter of account editing, but apparently not.
To make things worse, once I had my hi-speed up and running, one of the first things I did was to cancel my NetZero dial-up, permanently remove their programs from my hard drive, and close and disconnect my Verizon land phone line, because the money we’re spending for the new digital cable and high speed internet is coming from the money we’re saving from the dial-up and land-line costs by living off cell phone only.
So I’m stuck here with no dial-up program and no phone line to dial-up with and no cable internet either. Thankfully I have my work laptop with wireless internet, so I could leave y’all this little note.
All because I couldn’t remember my own friggin’ address. SIGH…
