Here’s an odd little list of words that cannot be added to the back of your personalized NFL jersey when you order from NFL.com. An accompanying story is found here.
Of course all the famous Carlin-dirty-words are found here, but the odd part is that you can’t put the word “GAY” on the back of your personalized jersey. Even if you are World Champion New England Patriots defensive back Randall Gay. Stranger still is that “FAG” and “DYKE” are allowed, but not “LESBIAN”. I suppose that those first two are allowed so British cigarette smokers and Dutch levy builders can still have their jerseys. What’s even funnier is that the NFL is even considering those Sapphic females who can’t spell, as it bans “LESBIN”, “LESBAIN”, and “LESBAYN” as well.
You can’t have “TONGUE” on your jersey, even if you are New York Jets safety Reggie Tongue.
But some restrictions seem just plain silly. “ATHLETES FOOT” isn’t allowed. I don’t know why you’d want that jersey, but certainly it represents a significant number of players.
“CARRUTH” is there — I guess it makes sense that the NFL doesn’t want its former players / murderers being represented, but then again, “SIMPSON” isn’t on the list.
“DAHMER” isn’t allowed, but gosh, there’s got to be more than one Dahmer in the world, right? I mean “GACY”, “BERKOWITZ”, “MALVO”, “OSWALD”, “SIRHAN”, “McVEIGH”, and “HINCKLEY” are all allowed. What’s up with that?
There’s a few initials that are so offensive they aren’t allowed: “BM”, “DD”, “HO”, “BI”, “KY”, and “LL” are forbidden, and I can only figure out why the first five are considered. “LL”? What am I missing?
Oh, maybe it’s a rapper thing, like “LL Cool J”. After all, they won’t allow “DRE” or “G UNIT” either.
If you’re going to make the obvious Green Bay slam, spell it correctly. “FUDGE PAKCERS” isn’t allowed, but “FUDGE PACKERS” is nowhere on the list.
No “GOD” or “JESUS” allowed. Players can thank Him for touchdown catches, but fans can’t give Him a shout-out on a jersey. At least the NFL is fair, “SATAN”, “666”, and “SIX SIX SIX” aren’t allowed, either.
Any XFL fans remember Rod Smart of the Carolina Panthers. His nickname, “HE HATE ME” isn’t allowed.
My favorite computer error, the “ID TEN T” / “ID10T” isn’t allowed, which are derivations of “IDIOT”, which isn’t allowed, and if you are an idiot, then “IDOIT” isn’t allowed, though I suppose that one could be “I do it”.
Of course you can’t have “BUDWEISER” or “K MART”. Why would you want them, anyway?
