Yahoo! News – Syria Says Might Pull Army from Lebanon in Months: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said Syrian troops might pull out of Lebanon in the next few months, as Lebanese protesters rallied in central Beirut on Tuesday demanding Syria get out of their country.
Any minute now we’ll hear the Bushites taking responsibility for this. “See, we are spreading democracy throughout the Middle East!” Hmm, could it be that Syria is realizing that they are spreading their troops too thin by remaining in Lebanon, especially when they’ve got a hostile superpower occupying the country next door? Could it be that the people of Lebanon are more inspired by the Ukrainian elections than the Iraqi elections?
Regardless, you just know the Bushites are going to claim this one. They said they’d spread democracy, and it is spreading, much like Reagan said, “tear down this wall,” and later the Berlin Wall came down. I believe both of these outcomes owed more to the timing and politics of their own countries than anything our Republican administrations have done.
Or maybe I’m naïve. Maybe invading countries without provocation, torturing their citizens, bombing their civilians, and flouting international law is just the way you get things done in the Middle East.
