Well, Kindasleezzy Lies just got confirmed as Secretary of State by the Senate in an 85-13 vote. However, three good things came out of the Senate debate. One: the Democratic Party is showing signs of testicular fortitude. Two: It’s the first time since Al Haig in 1981 that a SoS designee hasn’t been unanimously confirmed. And ol’ “I’m in charge here” Al had less than half — 6 — of the no votes than Kindasleezzy, while in 1973 Dr. Kissinger received 7 no votes. So when you read those headlines saying Rice “easily” won confirmation (Houston Chronicle, I’m looking in your direction), remember that she was voted against by as many Senators as Al Haig and Henry Kissinger combined, a record number (thank you, Times Online in the UK). Three: The “L” word has finally been unsheathed (no, not “liberal”, but “lie”).
Rice Wins Confirmation as Secretary of State: ‘I don’t like to impugn anyone’s integrity, but I really don’t like being lied to repeatedly, flagrantly, intentionally,‘ Sen. Mark Dayton (D-Minn.) said. ‘It’s wrong. It’s undemocratic, it’s un-American, and it’s dangerous And it is occurring far too frequently in this administration. And this Congress, this Senate must demand that it stop now.’
A list of the 13 Democrats with a conscience will appear here as soon as http://thomas.loc.gov publishes it. (I do notice that they passed a resolution honoring Johnny Carson yesterday.)
