My article from August 31, On the Offense Against Terrorism, made the Opinion section of the Sunday Oregonian newspaper. You can use the link above to check it out online.
I had to severely edit the piece. The Oregonian has a limit of 150 words. I chopped over 350 words from the original.
The Republicans say we need to be on the offensive against terror. They think that we can win the war on terror like World War II.
The problem is that there is no Terrorslavia. Our enemy is a mind-set. Using our military against terror is like using water to put out a gasoline fire.
Why do they hate us? We get simplistic answers such as “they hate us for our freedoms.” So why don’t they hate Canada, Sweden or other free democracies?
They hate us because we keep bases in their holy lands, our actions have killed their families, we abandoned them after they revolted against Saddam Hussein, and they perceive us as “crusaders” against their religion.
The real tools against terrorism are intelligence operatives, cooperation with allies and, dare I say, sensitivity toward the religious and cultural realities of the region.
