The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave

I love America.

It seems strange that I have to say that. I was born here. I vote. I pay taxes. I served in the National Guard. But because I have a different opinion about politics, I have to say that to some people.

I love America, dammit!

I love the fact that we are a rather successful multi-ethnic, multi-sectarian, multi-cultural thriving democracy. I love that we have evolved to the point recognizing injustices of the past and working to fight injustice in the present. I love that we have always fought repression from and corruption within our government.

I love that our country was formed by men with an inherent distrust of authority and an understanding that absolute power corrupts absolutely. I love that the spirit of rebellion in those men lives on in so many today who fight for our freedoms. I love that the skepticism in those men lives on in the founding documents they left us.

I know our history is not spotless. I have so much regret for so many of the things my country has done. That does not diminish my honor and respect for so much of the good my country has done. But I vow to learn from history and fight now so the unspeakable acts can never happen again. I love America and I don’t like anyone tarnishing her reputation. Not even a president.

I love that we have the freedom to petition our government for a redress of grievances. I love that my predecessors, progressive liberal thinkers like me, successfully used that right to bring so much good to so many. I love that we took care of retirees and the workers, extended rights to women and minorities, aided the sick and the disabled, and made government live within its means. I love that our country is flexible enough to learn from its mistakes and humble enough to apologize for its transgressions.

I love that our Declaration of Independence says:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. –That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

I love America.

I just have a problem with the way our leaders are running things, that’s all.

And if you mistake that as anything but love for America, then you don’t understand America.
