Study puts priestly abuse at 4%
Washington – Two church-sanctioned studies documenting sex abuse by United States Roman Catholic clergy say about four percent of clerics have been accused of molesting minors since 1950.
Well, what’s all the fuss over then? 24 out of 25 Catholic clergy are not molesting minors!
What’s 4% really mean? Here’s a little card game I just made up to illustrate. It’s called Three-Card Catholic Priest Molestation. Find a young child and hand them a deck of 52 standard playing cards. Ask them to shuffle the deck and deal themselves three cards. Turn the cards over one-by-one. If all three cards are the same suit (like a flush in poker), congratulations, they just won a free counseling session with Father Nambla!
[Interesting statistical example from Poker1.com: THE PROBABILITY OF BEING DEALT SEVEN-STUD STARTING HANDS (First Three cards)… actually, it’s not quite accurate, since the priest abuse rate is ~4.004% and dealing the first three cards in a 7-stud game all the same suit is ~4.02%… can you let ~0.016% slide on this one?]
