I blogged on this bill from Rep. James nonSense’n’bluster (R-WI) back on May 17, but it’s important enough to bring it up again. This is a truly awful bill (you can read why here). Stunningly enough, even the Freepers oppose it. You know when “Radical” Russ on the left and Free Republic on the right both think a bill stinks, it must really stink!
There’s plenty wrong with the bill (read the actual bill here), including more mandatory minimum sentences, more expansion of drug laws, more targeting the poor and disadvantaged, and more prisons and prisoners. But there’s even something in there for those of you who do not partake of the sacred herb or other drugs – the “snitch provision”.
As written, if you are merely aware that someone is smoking weed, and you do not report that to police within 24 hours, you get a mandatory two year prison sentence. So, for example, suppose you’re a parent and you find marijuana in your kid’s backpack. You can’t solve this in private as parent to child, you must call the police.
Furthermore, you must provide full assistance to the police in tracking and prosecuting drug crimes, or face the mandatory two years. That could be wearing a wire, participating in sting operations, turning over your personal records relating to the alleged offender, and much more. You must snitch, and you must go undercover to help the cops.
