I’m watching CNN when the Schindlers hold a press conference. Rev. Jesse Jackson gets up to speak on their behalf. The whole Jesse thing is tough for this unrepentant liberal, because I usually applaud Jackson’s stance for the poor, minorities, and working class. I guess there is some sort of internal consistency to his stance, since he is a Reverend and all. However, I think he’s wrong on this issue, and his appearance is foreshadowing a scary turning point in politics as the GOP seeks to hijack some black votes by appealing to the churchy black crowd.

Anyway, while Jackson is speaking there is a procession of protestors marching behind him. One woman is carrying a giant papiér maché spoon with the words “FEED TERRI” on it. Of course, Terri can’t use a spoon, and at this point feeding or hydrating Terri would likely kill her, and much more painfully than just slipping away as she is.

Then there’s a couple of signs that go by with something to the effect of “THE POPE HAS A FEEDING TUBE, GIVE ONE TO TERRI!” It’s nice to see the Protestants and Catholics have something in common. They can’t quite agree on the issue of whether one needs the intervention of clergy to reach Jesus, or whether the Pope is the infallible vessel of God on earth, but they can agree that the severely ill should be kept alive by modern scientific means. It warms my heart.

Then the signs that brought a gleam of joy to my liberal heart. One sign says “JEB: COWARD” and the other has “JEB 666” on it. Hoo boy! How’s those plans for 2008 looking now, Jeb? So much for being “Bush 44”. Most of the country will despise you for interfering in a family’s private medical decisions, and the rabid FEBAC wingnuts are turning on you for not doing enough to interfere. Beeee-autiful!

Somewhere in Arizona, John McCain is licking his chops — at least when he’s not fending off the ghosts of his fellow Vietnam Vets who were tortured to death in the Hanoi Hilton, the haunting souls who scream “how could you vote for AbuGhraibo “Torture Memo” Quaintzalez” when you have firsthand knowledge of the evil and futility of torture?!?
