Yes, me, the guy who gives two-tenth’s of a tick’s turd about baseball, watched an entire game from first pitch to last out. That’s because the team from New York (the city that held the Republican convention) was playing Game 7 against the team from Boston (the city that held the Democratic convention). The Republican convention city had gone up 3-0, winning their third game 19-8, a crushing landslide, virtually foretelling the elimination of the plucky underdogs from Massachusetts.
Then through three more games, two going to extra innings, the Democratic convention city’s team proved themselves more than equal to the Republican convention city’s team, despite the fact that the Republican convention city’s team has far more money to bankroll their efforts. Three side-by-side comparisons of the two teams, and the next thing you know, the team from Boston had accomplished something never done in baseball history — coming back from an insurmountable 3-0 deficit to pull neck-and-neck with the Republican convention city’s team.
When it was all said and done, the Democratic convention city’s team crushed the life out of the well-funded dynasty.
If things work out in the National League, we may see a team from Bush’s home state taking on the team from Kerry’s home state — Texas vs. Massachusetts. And if it goes seven games, it will be decided two days before election day.
It’s the year of the blue state underdog. Go BoSox! Go Kerry!
P.S. I still hate baseball, but it’s always enjoyable to watch an underdog win and the Yankees lose…
