Freedom Fighter of the Month
January 2010 – Eugene Davidovich
Operation Green Rx
By Russ Belville, NORML Outreach Coordinator
The case of Eugene Davidovich reminds us all that although the majority of Californians passed Prop 215, there is still much work to be done to truly protect the sick, dying, disabled, and sense-threatened from the War on Marijuana.
Eugene is a Navy veteran with two Gulf War deployments. After serving his country, he developed several conditions for which doctors “prescribed multiple pharmaceutical drugs, from which the side effects overpowered the benefits.” He tried medical cannabis, he found relief, was able to cease the pill regimen, and completed his MBA.
But acquiring medicinal cannabis in San Diego had become difficult. Law enforcement in this Navy-base town raided and shut down all collectives in the county. So Eugene left his successful software business, read the details of Prop 215, SB 420, and Attorney General Brown’s guidelines for legal collectives, and began cultivating and distributing cannabis to members of his collective.
Operation Green RX / Endless Summer is the martial-sounding term describing San Diego DA Bonnie Dumanis’ efforts to thwart the will of the people and persecute medical marijuana patients. Undercover sheriff’s deputies lied to doctors about medical conditions, produced false identification, and joined Eugene’s collective and others listed at California NORML. Eugene faithfully verified the legitimacy of the doctor, recommendation, and the identification of one of these ersatz “patients” and delivered a quarter ounce to him. Three days later, SDPD are raiding his home and Eugene’s headlining the evening news’s coverage of the raid that “cleaned up the streets of Navy Housing from dangerous drug dealers and seized a large amount of heroin, meth, [and] marijuana…”
Eugene is facing the trial of his life and fighting back. He’s facing four felony charges because San Diego has decided “we are gonna bring all you medical pot people down.” Learn more at http://www.eugenedavidovich.com.
