If you haven’t seen Al Gore’s speech for MoveOn.org PAC, it’s worth watching. I didn’t know that Gore could be so rousing and emotional a speaker. He certainly didn’t show any of this during his political career.
During the speech he raises his voice, calling on Rumsfeld and company to resign, asking “how dare they?” sully the reputation of America with their denial of the Geneva Conventions. He’s passionate and deliberate, his voice cracking at just the right moments. He even comes across with a little bit of Jesse Jackson / Martin Luther King Jr. style and a hint of Southern accent. It is beautiful.
Unfortunately, it is 4 years too late. Where was this guy in the 2000 Campaign? Speeches like this one might have helped to throw off that “wooden/robotic” caricature we saw endlessly parodied on shows like Satruday Night Live.
When Kerry wins, I want Al Gore as Secretary of State, Howard Dean as Secretary of Health & Human Services, John Edwards as Vice President, and Wesley Clark as Secretary of Defense. Wait, why stop there? How about Dennis Kucinich as Secretary of Labor, Dick Gephart as Secretary of Agriculture, Carol Moseley-Braun as Secretary of Education, and Rev. Al Sharpton as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
