If this war goes on, February 6, 2007, will be the 1,420th day of the Iraq War. Why is that day significant? Well, the war supporters said that I shouldn’t be marking the arbitrary milestone of the 2,000th American soldier to die in combat. So I picked February 6, 2007, because it will mark a not-so-arbitrary event. At the current rate of soldiers’ deaths in Iraq (over 2.1 per day), that will be the day the casualty count reaches 2,987. From that point on, more Americans will have died fighting in Iraq than perished on September 11th, 2001.
Let’s hope that day never comes. Let’s hope that by the fourth anniversary of this war, our services will have long since returned home.
