INTRODUCTION
This is the Rest in Playlist for Friday, July 28th, 2023, featuring recording artists from around the world who passed away in recent weeks.
Opening Act:
[26 Jul 2023] Randy Meisner, 77, American Hall of Fame musician (Eagles, Poco) and songwriter (“Take It to the Limit”), Grammy winner (1976, 1978), COPD.
Randy Meisner, bass player and one of the founding members of The Eagles, passed away at the age of 77 on July 26. Meisner was also one of the original members of Poco but left the band on such bad terms his image was erased from their debut album and replaced with a dog. He also went on to have a top twenty single in his solo career. But he will best be remembered as the songwriter and lead vocalist on this Eagles hit, Take it to the Limit.

Headliner:
[26 Jul 2023] Sinéad O’Connor, 56, Irish singer (“Nothing Compares 2 U“) and songwriter (“Mandinka“, “The Emperor’s New Clothes“), Grammy winner (1991).
Our headliner this week is Irish singer/songwriter Sinéad O’Connor, dead at age 56, also on July 26th. Perhaps most infamously known in America for ripping up a picture of the Pope on Saturday Night Live while denouncing child sexual abuse, O’Connor was an activist who never shied away from controversy. Here’s her best-known hit single, her haunting rendition of the Prince composition, Nothing Compares 2 U.

Main Stage:
[24 Jul 2023] Brad Houser, 62, American musician (Edie Brickell & New Bohemians, Critters Buggin), stroke.
It’s all Americans on the Main Stage this week. We begin with the passing of another bass player, Brad Houser of Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, who died of a stroke on July 24th at the age of 62. Houser also played baritone sax and bass clarinet, and also co-founded the band Critters Buggin. Here he is with fantastic tone on the big hit from Edie Brickell, What I Am.

[17 Jul 2023] DJ Deeon, 56, American dance music DJ and producer.
Our next artist is Deeon Boyd, known under his stage name DJ Deeon. He was an American Chicago house DJ, credited with pioneering ghetto house and helping create the Dance Mania label. Deeon passed away on July 17th at the age of 56. This is his collaboration with Lee Walker, featuring Mnek and Katy B, called Freak Like Me.

[05 Jul 2023] George Tickner, 76, American rock guitarist (Journey, Frumious Bandersnatch).
Our next artist began his career in the psychedelic 60s band Frumious Bandersnatch, but you would probably best know George Tickner, who died July 5th at the age of 76, from a band he co-founded in San Francisco called Journey. Tickner was only in the band for their debut album before leaving for Stanford Medical School. Here’s a track Tickner wrote from that album called Of A Lifetime.
Journey – Of A Lifetime
Festival Stage:
[17 Jul 2023] João Donato, 88, Brazilian jazz and bossa nova pianist.
Today on the Festival Stage we begin in Brazil, where we meet bossa nova pianist Joao Donato, has passed on July 17th at the age of 88. Here’s a track from his 1968 debut album entitled “Manha de Carnaval.”
João Donato – Manha De Carnaval
[24 Jul 2023] Leny Andrade, 80, Brazilian singer and musician.
It’s a double shot from Brazil as we welcome Leny Andrade to the Festival Stage, who passed on July 24th at age 80. She was described by Tony Bennett as the “Ella Fitzgerald of Brazil” and had several hits on the Brazilian charts. Here’s Andrade singing Nao Adianta.
Leny Andrade – Não Adianta
[24 Jul 2023] Dóris Monteiro, 88, Brazilian singer and actress.
Closing out our all-Brazil International Stage today we have Doris Montiero, a close friend of Leny Andrade’s who passed on the same day, July 24th, at the age of 88. A joint wake for both Montiero and Andrade was held the very next day in Rio de Janiero.
Doris Montiero – E Issa Ai
International Stage:

[22 Jul 2023] Vince Hill, 89, English singer (“Edelweiss“, “Take Me to Your Heart Again“).
Next we have another Englishman, Vincent Hill, who is our oldest artist this week to join the band eternal. Hill passed on July 22nd at the age of 89. He is best known for this cover version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein show tune “Edelweiss,” which reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart.

[26 Jul 2023] Surinder Shinda, 70, Indian Punjabi singer.
We close the Festival Stage with a prolific Indian Punjabi singer named Surinder Shinda, who passed on July 26th at the age of 70.

Encore:
[26 Jul 2023] Sinéad O’Connor, 56, Irish singer (“Nothing Compares 2 U“) and songwriter (“Mandinka“, “The Emperor’s New Clothes“), Grammy winner (1991).
We bring back Sinead O’Connor to the stage. The singer found herself taking harsh criticism for her political stands, from being comforted by Kris Kristofferson when she got booed off stage, to Frank Sinatra threatening to kick her ass for her refusal to sing if the US national anthem was played before her concerts. Here she is with another haunting cover, this time with Nirvana’s All Apologies.
Sinéad O’Connor – All Apologies
We close this week with a song written by Sinead O’Connor. The Emperor’s New Clothes, which hit the charts in Canada, Ireland, and Australia.
