I just returned from a volunteer meeting with America Coming Together. I’ve pledged to help canvass the neighborhood included in Precinct 306 of Washington County, Oregon. We’re doing a huge voter registration effort. I’m also donating nine hours of my time per week on top of that to do phone banking, data entry, and database maintenance. I’m even throwing in my old Pentium computer and a wireless phone to help with the effort.
It’s just an amazing feeling to me to listen to all of these people from all walks of life talk about their passion for removing the Bush Crime Family from office this November (thanks to the Mike Malloy Show, now on Air America, for that new moniker.) And it’s refreshing to live in a swing precinct in a swing county in a swing state where my efforts could make the difference.
Our organizer put it very succinctly. Gore won Oregon by a little over 6,000 votes. That’s two or three votes per precinct.
I’m also a little scared. The more emotionally invested I get in this campaign, the more I dread the possibility that Shrub and Diebold and Jeb and some well-placed thwarting of supposed terrorist attacks and Osama at the convention in chains a la King Kong and disenfranchised or confused Floridians could tip this election to Bush. I’ve never believed that an election could make me cry, but this one could.
But the good news at http://www.electoral-vote.com/ makes me feel better.
